Melton Mowbray is the Pork Pie capital of the UK, with the addition of the production of Stilton cheese, making food the heart of Melton's appeal. In fact, it is one of only six places licensed to make Stilton in the country, and only pies made within the designated zone can hold the Melton Mowbray name. Before the renowned food production, the town's economy was based on wool, iron manufacturing, and coal mining. Melton Mowbray is also home to Melton cloth, a tightly woven fabric, which has been heavily milled with a nap, making it a great choice for workmen's jackets in Britain and Mackinaws in North America.
Melton has a thriving SME community, as well as a breadth of major manufacturers from commercial operations, from international food and drink production and logistics companies to knowledge-based entrepreneurs and rural artisan businesses. The town's council is now focusing on growth and sustainability in the new couple of years, to improve access to higher paid jobs, and better employability skills.
